MARCH / APRIL 2010
THE PATH TO SPRING
ON DAYBREAK LAVENDER FARM
When you're 65 as I am, you think. Right now, I'm thinking about paths ... past, present and future. Retirement is a new and scary future path. With all that's swirling around us all, where is our safe and happy path now? How do we find it? Will we recognize it? Doesn't a path imply that sages and fools, devils and angels have walked it before? And am I not walking mine for those who might follow? Does that matter?
#1. (verb transitive) To make a path in, or on (something),
or for (some one).
#2. (noun) A way, course, or track, in which anything moves or has moved; route; passage; an established way; as, the path of a meteor, of a caravan, of a storm, of a pestilence. Also used figuratively, of a course of life or action.
#3. (noun) A trodden way; a footway.
#4. (verb intransitive) To walk or go.
My immediate desire is a path to freakin' spring! I need leaf and bloom and shoots and tendrils. And I need them NOW!! So, my path to Spring begins by inspiring myself.
Scanning my Garden View Horticultural Park album reminds me of what a difference one life and one path can make. Yours. Mine. Henry Ross.
In the winter of 1949, when I was 5, Henry Ross bought 16 acres of land in the middle of a bustling strip-mall area. Turned out to be wetland! Didn't change Henry's path. Armed with "love, zeal and knowledge", Henry made a beginning. Today, at 82 Henry's path is love made real. His vision is alive with color and in glorious bloom!
Garden View puts on its show in early spring, when we need it the most!! DayBreak's lavender fields unfurl in July and right now look a wee bit raggedy. Still, there's much to be grateful for ... the snow didn't total the lavender although if we had a lavender cam, the shot would be pretty bleak just now. The plants are all grayish but if you look way down near the soil, you can see little green shoots emerging. The white willows are yellowing up. The pussy willows are furring out. The peony spikes are piercing the earth in search of sun. And the columbine has sent up a trial trio of leaflets. There are no frogs yet but the bird feeders are at rush hour levels nearly all day so it looks like everything is good to go for spring. So the path to spring and out of this difficult, difficult winter is coming into focus.
It's been a hard winter. We know the faces of this economic crisis. They're our family, our friends, our co-workers. Maybe us! But watching friends and family walk down these new paths - entering uncharted territory with courage and bravery -- has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life!
And they have shown me some new paths -- beyond the swirling storm "out there" to what really matters in here. In my heart. In my home. With my family and my friends. I've come across some really neat information. I'd like to share some of them with you. So, buckle up and let's go!!

KINDNESS!! THE MOST UNDERRATED VIRTUE
ON MARCH 31, LET'S MAKE A BIG LOTTA NOISE
313 IS BE KIND DAY!!
I'm with HHDL! Kindness is a vastly underrated virtue. And we live in a mean world. Sarcasm. Put downs. Bullies. They all seem to be gaining ground. Let's take NICE back!! Let's really celebrate this day when everyone makes an extra effort to be warm, open, friendly, generous and considerate. This year, it's March 31, 2010. And it's going to be an amazing party if we all pitch in.
Imagine not just doing kind things for others, but receiving them in kindness too. Imagine what is the kindest thing you could do for yourself, someone else, the planet, for animals, for your colleagues, your families.
That's what Be Kind Day is all about. So, let's kick it up a notch. Let's really get behind - or out in front of - 313!! Visit http:/www.bekindday.org for ideas for the family, classroom media, workplace, youth groups, community centers, hospitals, nursing homes, environmental groups etc.
Kindness is defined as a quality of being friendly, generous and considerate
Kind is defined as a group of people or things having similar characteristics
How will you Be Kind on 313?
And really, I mean, is one day enough?

LISTENING!!
THE SECOND MOST UNDERRATED VIRTUE
Don't those roses look like they're listening? Why do I always feel heard
in my garden? Roses don't try to fix it, they just sweetly listen ...
Please Listen ~ A Poem
When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn't feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem.
Listen! All I ask is that you listen. Don't talk or do - just hear me.
Advice is cheap; 20 cents will get you both Dear Abby and Billy Graham in the same newspaper, and I can do for myself; I am not helpless. Maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless.
When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy. But when you accept as a simple fact that I feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can stop trying to convince you and get about this business of understanding what's behind this irrational feeling.
And when that's clear, the answers are obvious and I don't need advice. Irrational feelings make sense when we understand what's behind them.
Perhaps that's why prayer works, sometimes, for some people - because God is mute, and he doesn't give advice or try to fix things. God just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.
So please listen, and just hear me.
And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn
- and I will listen to you.

"CHOOSE YOUR HARD!"
LEARNING NEW SELF-SOOTHING SKILLS FOR ME, MY KIDS & GRANDKIDS
"Choose your hard" is my new mantra. A friend at Weight Watchers dropped it on me. We were talking about dieting and her point was that dieting was hard but so was being overweight. So, Jody, choose your hard. Right now, that means working on managing stressors. Stress is a bear, right? But isn't being stressed harder? And worst of all? Expecting not to be stressed!! That's at the root of most stress: the sense that it shouldn't even be happening! Right? And there is mounting evidence that increasing computer use creates a kind of intellectual stimulation that kicks off use overproduction of hormones that can lead to imbalances associated with nearly everything!! Add to that our kids and grands, really don't know jack about how to calm themselves. They are great at how to get wild and crazy but no one has bothered to teach them the skills I call "self-soothing." ~So let's us do it! Here are my top self-soothing skills.
1. THE KEY QUESTION: When in a pickle, I ask myself: "Self, in light of your experience and knowledge, is this expectation realistic?" I get a lot of good laughs when I answer that one honestly! Go ahead, try it. Let me know how it goes. That one question has been life-altering for me.
2. I carry Sandalwood at all times. Aromatherapy blocks worry
and fear.
3. Any form of massage ... self or otherwise. Touch is sooo healing.
4. 1 Dark Chocolate Lavender Truffle per day!
5. Walking with Duchess, my adorable cocker. She is joy personified and a constant reminder that joy and happiness are choices. Choose your hard. Choose your joy.
I plan to teach my grandkids some self-soothing skills this summer by asking them to make a Favorite Things List ... that does NOT include computer or video games. Did you know that kids with ADD or ADHD lack strong self-soothing skills? And that they are vulnerable to internet addiction? It's true. Google self-soothing skills and you'll find out that your Home Spa routines are not only super-healthy for you but healing for the kiddoes, too!!
IT'S EARTHDAY'S BIRTHDAY!
A BILLION OF US ARE CELEBRATING.
Only Mother Earth could create art like this, right???
In 1973, I worked on the Brooklyn chapter of the first organizing committee of Earth Day. I joined for the lowest of motives: a gorgeous guy! He was large and in charge and wherever he was, I wanted to be!! I was a Green Groupie!! Back then, it was all about environmental protests, so we leafleted, picketed and marched. And we could not get arrested. Literally. New York's Finest didn't even show up!! Wow have we come a long way Baby!!
Today, over 1 billion people will mark Earth Day all over the world and in a host of ways. If you are looking for ways to celebrate Earthday.net has a zillion ideas and my favorite is No Child Left Inside! It's a petition asking Congress to mandate environmental education as part of all school's curriculum!! Nifty eh? Read all about it here on http://www.Earthday.net/
And if you want to find an Earth Day Celebration near you, they even have a locator here. http://ww2.earthday.net/search/location

MY SECRET SWAP GARDEN
THE LIBERATION OF GROWING SOME OF MY FOOD
My garden is an outdoor hangout where I can read and meditate. And grow some of my own food. Last year I put in some raised beds which are perfect for Square Foot gardening, a classic approach for getting most yield from the least space. Ruth tells me that during the Depression, in her grandfather's neighborhood everyone's front, back and side yards were completely given over to veggie gardens. And of course there were the Victory Gardens of World War II.
Ruth hates to till the soil, so she's practicing Lasagna Gardening this year. I can't wait to see how it goes. This author's motto is: No Digging, No Tilling, No Weeding, No Kidding! Sound like a plan to me!!
Speaking of which, and with that in mind, a couple of neighbors and I got together and we're planning our gardens with swapping mind. She grows gorgeous leeks; mine look like scallions. But nobody touches my tomatoes. And I'm good at squash. Ruth is a lettuce maven. Mike C. does great melons. So, we're forming a mini-co-op. We're not growing anything that we can buy for less like potatoes or carrots. We're looking at what's costly and growing it!! Like sugar snap peas which I adore!! And then freezing, canning or drying them.

MY YAHOO FOOD GROUP!!
Are you hip to Yahoo Groups? For my money, when it comes to food prep and budget-y smarts, the very coolest group is. I have learned so much from this amazingly experienced, smart and loving bunch of folks that I can't begin to tell you. Well I can. I learned how to make my own dried onion soup mix! Goodbye pricey Liptons. How to dry everything! So now I scour the produce section for markdowns, take them home and dry them for 1.7 center per hour of electricity used. Yes, they told me that I wasn't wasting energy using my dehydrator.

SEEING THE FUTURE
At the age of 65, I find myself a single woman.
Again.
I've been well acquainted with grief this winter.
And excitement! Nervousness. Goofiness. The whole gamut!
And Spring is certainly a welcome fragrant and vibrant reminder of hope and rebirth. And isn't that a general outline of any crisis? Surprise. Fear. Grief. Optimism. Opportunity. Sure it is. And I'm not one to waste a perfectly good crisis! So, along with the sadness of closing the chapter of my marriage, comes the bright blank slate of a new beginning. But WHICH new beginning? (Nothing changes at DayBreak; in fact, I'm more in love with "her" than ever, so never fear!) As my life direction offers me the possibilities of new paths, I realize that one of my hesitations in resetting my compass is that I don't "see" down each of the potential paths; I don't "see" what each has to offer. I'm not talking about rational, evaluative thinking. I'm talking about closing my eyes, seeing in color and form where each path might take me and then mentally strolling down that path to see how it feels. It's easy to "see" the past and the present. But to "see" your future, you have to have a good idea of it's parts. So I'm re-flexing my out-of-shape visualization muscle. With a new appreciation of just how important a skill it is at ALL times of life, not just during tough times like a recession. So when I came across the article below again (I featured it last year) I saw with new eyes, just how essential and incredible the SKILL of visualization is. Because, truly, ONLY if you can SEE it, can you ACHIEVE it!!"

USING THE PALETTE OF OUR MIND
THE SCIENCE OF VISUALIZATION
I need this now more than ever!! For me, the key here is detail. All the great visualizers see their completions in minute detail. It's not hoping but seeing -- and being willing to arrive at deeper, more permanent wisdom by experimenting with myself. In a blinding flash of insight, I realized that's why they call it self-ACTUAL-ization and not self-THINKING ABOUT IT-ization!!
USING THE PALETTE OF OUR MIND:
THE SCIENCE OF VISUALIZATION & MAXIMIZING YOUR BRAIN'S POTENTIAL DURING THE RECESSION
By Srinivasan Pillay, Huffington Post, 3/3/09
Chronic stress can:
Constrict blood flow to your brain
Lower overall brain function
Prematurely age your brain
And there is stress everywhere we turn. The recession is frightening and overwhelming for many of us. Jobs are scarce. Housing is a mess. And the difficulty of making money threatens our comfort and leaves us feeling anxious and stressed. At times like these, we may hear advice columnists tell us to "visualize success" or to "imagine our greatest possibilities". While this is inspiring, is there actually a science behind this?
The brief answer to this question is: yes. Although visualization was regarded as "new age hype" for many years, research has shown that there is a strong scientific basis for how and why visualization works. It is now a well-known fact that we stimulate the same brain regions when we visualize an action and when we actually perform that same action. For example, when you visualize lifting your right hand, it stimulates the same part of the brain that is activated when you actually lift your right hand. This shared area of brain activation when we imagine an action and perform it has been demonstrated extensively in the scientific literature. A striking example of how visualization increases brain activation is seen in stroke.
When a person has a stroke due to a blood clot in a brain artery, blood cannot reach the tissue that the artery once fed with oxygen and nutrients, and that tissue dies. This tissue death then spreads to the surrounding area that does not receive the blood any more. However, if a person with this stroke imagines moving the affected arm or leg, brain blood flow to the affected area increases and the surrounding brain tissue is saved. Imagining moving a limb, even after it has been paralyzed after a stroke, increases brain blood flow enough to diminish the amount of tissue death. This is a very clear indicator of the power of visualization.
In fact, athletes have known about this power for a long time. Expert athletes use imagery and visualization to run their races in their goal times. Studies have shown that these athletes first imagine running the race in the goal time in as much detail as possible and are then able to execute it after practicing visualizing this. One study showed that "...visualizations under hypnosis enabled nationally ranked Stanford male gymnasts to execute for the first time several complex tricks that they had been working on for over a year. The gymnasts were able to eliminate timing errors in the tricks, to increase flexibility, and, possibly, to concentrate strength..." Another study showed that youth soccer players increased their confidence in playing when they visualized their moves. Visualization has also been shown to improve high jumpers clearing the bar.
Tell your brain your plan in a thousand words, and it gets bored mid-way and wants to go to sleep. But draw it a picture, and it will respond with much deeper interest and attention. While this is all well and good, how can you apply this science to maximize your brain's potential during the recession? Here are some suggestions to get you started:
1. "...It is now a well-known fact that we stimulate the same brain regions when we visualize something and when we actually do it..." If, during the recession, you have no idea how to act, start by imagining what you want. What you want will not come immediately, but imagining is a way of getting the process started quickly. For example, if you want to start a home-based baking business, start by imagining being in the kitchen surrounded by cakes and cookies that you are taking out of the oven. Draw a sketch of this, and then draw sketches that come before and after this. The more clearly and repetitively you outline this, the more likely it will be that you will succeed.
2. "...if a person with this stroke imagines moving the affected arm or leg, brain blood flow to the affected area increases and the surrounding brain tissue is saved..." If you have had a setback, don't give up. Keep the blood flowing to the brain area that will execute your action by focusing your visualization on what you want. During the recession, people often focus on their fears. All this will do is increase blood flow to the brain regions that will stop your actions. Remember, a failure is not a final statement that you will not succeed. It is information that your vision has to be changed, refined or repeated.
3. "...visualizations under hypnosis enabled nationally ranked Stanford male gymnasts to execute for the first time several complex tricks that they had been working on for over a year..." Hypnosis here works because it decreases anxiety and increases focus. When you start your visualization, strive to construct the image with your mind free of worries even if you have to sculpt out an "artificial space" to do this. When you visualize while worrying, it is like painting with a shaky brush. Calmness increases the creativity and authenticity of your "brushstrokes".
4. "...youth soccer players increased their confidence in playing when they visualized their moves..." If you find that the recession has eroded your confidence, use visualization of your goals to help increase your confidence. Practice makes perfect. Repeat these visualizations every day. As you imagine your goal and process more clearly, your confidence will increase enough to execute on your desired goal.
These are a few principles of visualization that can help maximize your brain's capacity as you plan for growth during the recession. Remember: visualization is not just some hokey way of getting to your goals.
The principles are grounded in science and with all the recession chaos going on, it is important to carve out a space to use the palette of your mind to paint the pictures that you desire. When you do this, your brain will act in accordance with your visions.
DAYBREAK ... A 7TH GENERATION BUSINESS
BECAUSE A GOOD PLANET IS HARD TO FIND!!
To celebrate Earth Day, the DayBreak team is giving Mother Earth the best gift we can think of: a 7th Generation business. What's that?
It's the Native American Philosophy that we must leave the Earth, Air, Water and Land so that in seven generations it will be better than when we found it. Every day we look for ways to conserve, do more with less, shrink our footprint, expand our Environmental commitment. There's no magic bullet that will solve our Environmental dilemma. The solution is all of us taking gazillions of small actions that add up to green progress.
Take our soap pots for example. We don't wash them any more. We let the excess soap dry, wipe it out with biodegradable paper towels and toss those in the compost! Saves water, puts the waste where it can be reused and is actually simpler. We did have to buy two extra pots but that's a small contribution.~
And I've never thought that the Green Path had to be the least expensive path. The real bargain, the biggest bargain in the Universe is a healthy planet because if this one falls sick, I don't have a Plan B, do you? A good planet is hard to find these days!!
